Respected TBS Buyer Hangs Up His BootsSeptember 28, 2015
September 2015 saw the retirement of a true ‘gentleman’ from TBS, Gordon Martin. He joined the company in 1994, having previously worked in engineering, including spells on North Sea oil rigs. He started on the counter at the Towcester branch, with a view to training as a buyer. “It was a culture shock,” he admits. “I felt like a total novice.”
Before long, though, Gordon was buying stock, as well as booking in, invoice matching, general trouble-shooting, and running the annual stock take – which he actually enjoyed! His eye for detail and his understanding of business systems meant that, often, “the buck that nobody else wanted stopped with me,” he reflects. “I had a good bunch of colleagues around me. I couldn’t have done it without them.”
What will he miss the most? “Being part of a great team, creating a good atmosphere for customers and staff.” In fact, Gordon will continue to come in to the Daventry branch one day a week to help with the TBS webpage.
In his retirement, Gordon will be caring for his elderly father, but is looking forward to having more time for DIY and for healthy country walks with his wife. We will miss his kindly manner, his helpfulness and his ability to sort out problems. Gordon, we wish you well!
