One of the perks of being a Builders’ Merchant is that you pick up all sorts of hints and tips from experienced tradespeople. A long-established family business of stonemasons told us about the benefits of pointing with lime mortar.

So, when the nice folks from the trade blog Local Traders asked us for a guest post, we took this as our subject. You can find the article by clicking on this link: Repoint With Hydraulic Lime

We offer an in-depth look at the best way to point up natural stone or old brick walls, given that cement mortar (especially when treated with waterproofer) doesn’t filter out moisture and can therefore cause the face of the stones to drop off.

Experienced set-ups like the National Trust only sanction hydraulic lime for these older properties – which was the time-honoured method for centuries, after all. Here’s a quick peek at its many advantages.

  • Excellent workability and good water retention.
  • Good plasticity, high cohesion and low shrinkage.
  • Resistant to sulphates and freeze-thaw actions.

TBS sells hydraulic lime in 25kg bags, at 3.5 Newton strength. Note: these must be stored in a dry place.
