Using a Vapour Control Layer Will Reduce Condensation

June 20, 2017

TBS stocks Vapour Control Barrier Sheet, from JRT Supplies. It’s a quality 125mu polyethylene product that forms a barrier to help reduce convective heat loss and prevent condensation between the layers of a structure. It comes in a 2.45m x 50m roll and is green tinted. The advantage of a single roll is that it prevents cracking in the screed.

Condensation Problems? Ventilation or Dry Lining Could Be Your Answer

A Manrose axial fan with humidistat

If you live in an older house with solid walls, you may well have a problem with damp appearing on your interior walls. This is almost certainly caused by condensation. There are things you can do about this, and TBS can help you.

First, check that your home is properly ventilated. One very practical answer is to fit extractor fans. TBS stocks axial fans and centrifugal fans from Manrose, some with a built-in humidistat, together with a range of grilles and ducting that should meet your requirements, .

Another thing to consider is dry lining the walls. It’s a bigger job but can make a serious difference. Click here for an overview of what’s involved – very handy if you’re considering the DIY option.

Batten frame with insulation being added

Dry lining involves fitting battens to the walls, adding insulation, then fixing a plasterboard wall. The frame can be made using 25 x 38mm battens. Insulation could be either 25mm polystyrene or Knauf Dritherm cavity wall insulating batts.

Now you have two options. Either tack a polythene vapour barrier to the battens, then fix 9.5mm plasterboard. Or you can opt for Knauf Vapourshield plasterboard, which is already backed with silver foil.

TBS stocks all the products you would require for dry lining. So call our Sales team at any TBS depot for information, advice and some good prices.

Insulated Cavity Closers Reduce Condensation and Mould

June 13, 2017

1d3b4a13dab4435d9c93936f30940c6eAs experienced tradesmen will tell you, insulated cavity closers are the economical way to close cavities around window and door openings when you’re building.

TBS is pleased to offer you Dacatie Insulated Cavity Closers, from Quantum Profile Systems. As a market leader, the Dacatie brand gives you the assurance that you’ll be complying fully with building regulations.

Dacatie Insulated Cavity Closers are made of reconstituted PVCu and include insulation which is CFC free and zero rated for Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP). They offer a highly versatile solution in first fix installation when a frame former is not required.

The closers come in 2.4m lengths. The SF-Multi is good for cavities 50 – 100mm. The TF-Multi (at our Towcester branch only) is good for cavities 100 – 150mm.

These beauties reduce the risk of condensation, mould and moisture migration across the cavity.

They overcome variations in cavity width.

And you don’t need any ties – simply nail them to the blocks.
